Dosage Protocols
| Application | Route | Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labor induction | IV infusion | 0.5–2 mU/min, titrated | Continuous |
| Behavioral research | Intranasal | 20–40 IU | Single dose or daily |
| Social anxiety research | Intranasal | 24 IU | 30–45 min before assessment |
Administration
Intranasal oxytocin is delivered via nasal spray. Standard research protocol: 3 puffs per nostril (4 IU per puff = 24 IU total). Hold head tilted back 30 seconds after each spray. Effects typically onset within 30–45 minutes.
Timing
Research protocols typically administer intranasal oxytocin 30–45 minutes before behavioral assessments or social interactions. For chronic studies, daily dosing has been used for up to 6 weeks. No standard cycling protocol exists.
Storage
- Intranasal spray: Refrigerate at 2–8°C
- Pitocin (injectable): Store at 2–8°C. Do not freeze
