Social Bonding & Trust
Intranasal oxytocin has been shown to increase trust, empathy, and social cognition in multiple studies. The landmark 2005 Nature study by Kosfeld et al. demonstrated increased trust in economic games. Subsequent research has shown enhanced ability to read facial expressions, increased eye contact, and improved social memory. Effects are context-dependent — oxytocin may increase in-group favoritism alongside out-group caution.
Anxiety & Stress Reduction
Oxytocin attenuates HPA axis activity, reducing cortisol release during social stress. Research in social anxiety disorder has shown decreased amygdala reactivity to threatening social stimuli after intranasal oxytocin. Some studies show benefit for PTSD-related social avoidance.
Reproductive Health
Oxytocin (Pitocin) is FDA-approved for labor induction and prevention of postpartum hemorrhage. It is the standard of care for augmenting uterine contractions during delivery and remains one of the most widely used medications in obstetrics worldwide.
